Busy airports and flight delays are expected parts of traveling, and both can cause major headaches. Apps can help you work around some of these issues, but if you use iMessage, you actually don’t need an airline app, a flight tracking app, or even the ability to Google to figure out if your flight is running behind schedule. Your iPhone's Messages app has a built-in flight status tool that offers real-time information about departures, arrivals, gate changes, and baggage claim numbers.

Here’s how to find your flight status without leaving the Messages app.

How to track flights in iMessage

First, you’ll need to have texted yourself or someone else your flight number via iMessage—not SMS—as the feature only works on and across Apple devices. That message must follow one of these formats:

• Airline + flight number: Delta Airlines 405

• Airline abbreviation + flight number: DL 405

• Airline abbreviation + flight number (no space): DL405

(DeltaAirlines405 and DeltaAirlines 405 with no space or only on space may also work.)

The first option—with “Airlines” added to the company name—is your best bet across all airlines. Simply typing “Delta 405" or “JetBlue 101" is not enough to trigger the flight tracker. You’ll know your format is correct if the text is underlined (indicating a hyperlink) once the message has been sent.

To track the flight, tap the underlined text to pull up a menu with two options. You can copy the flight code to your iPhone clipboard or select “Preview Flight” to view flight details. If the flight is active, you’ll also see a real-time tracking map.

Tapping “Preview Flight” pulls up another window with more flight data, such as on-time status, departure and arrival times, duration, and gate and baggage claim information. Depending on the flight, you can also swipe to see stats for the same flight number on upcoming days.

Obviously, this is most useful for active or same-day itineraries, as flight numbers that are used infrequently may not have data available for your flight. If you don’t see the underlined text in Messages when you send your airline name and flight number, check that the format is correct.

Among the highlights of Prime Video's May lineup is a rom-com starring Anne Hathaway as a single mom in a relationship with the younger lead singer of a world-famous boy band. The Idea of You streams on May 3, the same day that season three of Clarkson's Farm—a docuseries following Jeremy Clarkson's foray into the business of farming—also drops.

Arriving later in the month is the sophomore season of Outer Range (May 16), the sci-fi Western starring Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher fighting back threats to his family's land.

For reality TV fans, there's the premiere of The GOAT (May 8), hosted by Daniel Tosh and starring fourteen celebrity competitors from shows like Big Brother, Love Is Blind, Survivor, and The Real Housewives franchise vying to become the "greatest reality star of all time." Later in the month, gameshow The 1% Club (May 23)—an adaptation of the British series to be hosted by Patton Oswalt—tests contestants' intelligence to win money.

If you have subscriptions to services like Netflix and Uber Eats—or you simply love to sign up for free trials that require you to enter a credit card—you should consider using virtual cards as your go-to payment method.

Unlike your physical credit cards, virtual cards generate unique account numbers that can be used for transactions, meaning that your actual card number is protected. You can have different card numbers for each online store or subscription service, and you can set spending limits and expiration dates as well as lock or delete virtual cards without impacting your actual payment account.

(Note that this is different from paying with a digital wallet—Apple Pay or Google Pay—which uses your real card number for transactions.)

The biggest perks of using a virtual card

Using a virtual card for your subscriptions makes it easier to cancel subscriptions or let your account lapse, which could save you money. For example, if you sign up for a free trial with a one-time virtual card or a card you can deactivate, it doesn't matter if you forget to cancel before the trial period ends—the transaction won't go through.

Similarly, deactivating your virtual card is a simple way to cancel ongoing subscriptions, as the service won't be able to charge you going forward (though it's also best to complete the official cancellation process directly with the subscription service).

Of course, if you want to keep a subscription, a virtual card also has merit. A multi-use virtual card number will still be valid even if the physical card associated with the account has to be replaced due to theft, loss, or expiration, so you won't miss a minute of your shows or a single food delivery.

Another obvious benefit of a virtual card: security. If your information is part of a hack or leak, your real card number is protected. Plus, if your virtual card is one-time use only, no one will be able to make purchases to your account.

How to get a virtual credit card

Many credit card issuers allow you to enroll for a virtual card using your physical card. You might need to add the card to a digital wallet and check out using a browser extension or app, through which you'll be able to generate a one-time card number or receive a unique code to enter at checkout. American Express, Capital One, Citi, Mastercard, and Visa all support virtual cards.

Alternatively, services like Privacy.com and password managers like 1Password (via a Privacy.com partnership) offer the option to create and pay with virtual cards.

A variety of music-focused content is streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime in May. First up is the second season of Behind the Music (May 1) with episodes featuring Bell Biv DeVoe, Trace Adkins, and Wolfgang Van Halen, followed by Kiss The Future (May 7), a documentary film about U2's awareness-raising campaign for the crisis in Sarajevo, Bosnia, during their 1993 tour. There are new seasons of two Max Originals headlining May's lineup. May on Hulu feels like déjà vu: A big title coming early in the month is the season three premiere of Emmy Award-winning docuseries Welcome to Wrexham (May 3), originally set to launch in April. The show goes behind the scenes of the Welsh pro football club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, which recently received a second promotion after a run of wins.

Other documentary highlights include The Contestant (May 2), which tells the story of a man trapped in a small room whose life was broadcast on national TV in Japan over 15 months, and Black Twitter: A People's History (May 9), a three-part series based on Jason Parham's WIRED article about the influence of Black Twitter in American politics and culture.

For literature-inspired drama, catch season one of Shardlake (May 1), a Hulu original based on C.J. Sansom's Tudor mystery series and set in 16th century England, or The Killing Kind (May 14), a thriller series based on Jane Casey's book of the same name.

The biggest title coming to Disney+ in May is the premiere of the next installment of Dr. Who—three episodes will be available on May 10, with new episodes dropping every Friday after that. This is the first season of the BBC show to launch on Disney+, and features the adventures of the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).

In the Star Wars universe, you can catch the final episode of season three of Star Wars: The Bad Batch (May 1) and the premiere of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire (May 4), a six-episode Disney original series following Morgan Elsbeth and former Jedi Barriss Offee on their journey into the empire.

Weekly episodes of X-Men '97 will continue on Wednesdays along with the premiere of Marvel Studios' Assembled: The Making of X-Men '97 (May 22).

On the documentary side, there's also The Beach Boys (May 24), which goes behind the scenes with the history of the legendary pop band, and Jim Henson Idea Man (May 31), a Ron Howard film about the creator of classics Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “what something is worth,” and the answer contained four common letters and one uncommon letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was VALUE.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word. 

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

• Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

• Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

• CRANE

• TRACE

• SLANT

• CRATE

• CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

• SALET

• REAST

• TRACE

• CRATE

• SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

Wordle alternatives

If you can’t get enough of five-letter guessing games and their kin, the best Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:

• Wheeldle, which lets you play one puzzle after another

• Dordle and Quordle, which ask you to play two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at the same time, with the same guesses. There is also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.

• Waffle, which shows you several five-letter words, scrambled in a grid; you play by swapping the letters around until you solve.

• Absurdle, which changes the solution after each guess, but needs to stay consistent with its previous feedback. You have to strategically back it into a corner until there is only one possible word left; then you guess it, and win.

• Squabble, in which you play Wordle against other people with a timer running. You take damage if you spend too much time between guesses; winner is the last one standing.

• Antiwordle, in which you are trying not to guess the day’s solution. You’re required to reuse any letters that you (oops) guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at the game.
