What's New on Prime Video and Freevee in June 2024

31 May 2024 at 15:00

The most anticipated title to hit Prime Video in June is season four of The Boys (June 13), the satirical superhero show adapted from the same-named comic book series and starring Billy Butcher as Karl Urban, leader of the titular group of super powered individuals. In the new season, Urban has only months left to live and must work to bring his team back together to save the world. Three episodes premiere on June 13, with additional episodes dropping weekly through mid-July.

Prime Video is also streaming two original sports documentaries in June. First up is Power of the Dream (June 18), a feature-length film that chronicles how WNBA team the Atlanta Dream's support of Black Lives Matter helped flip a Georgia Senate seat and led to the election of Rev. Raphael Warnock. Federer: Twelve Final Days (June 20) offers a behind-the-scenes look—using home video footage—of the last days of tennis star Roger Federer's career.

Finally, there's My Lady Jane (June 27), an eight-episode original series that tells an alternate history of Lady Jane Grey—played by Emily Bader—in which the British noblewoman avoids execution and instead lives a life of romance and adventure.

Here’s everything else coming to Prime Video and Amazon-owned, ad-supported Freevee in June, including the blockbuster, Oscar-winning Oppenheimer (June 18), from director Christopher Nolan.

How to Deal With Your Dog's Incessant Digging

29 May 2024 at 16:00

A dog that likes to dig can pretty quickly destroy your yard. And though you can scold them when you catch them in the act, stopping the behavior entirely will likely require a bit more effort. With warmer weather on the way and yard improvement on the spring to-do list, here’s how to fix those holes (as well as a few ideas for stopping your dog from digging in the first place).

Why your dog might be digging in your yard

You can fill in the holes your dog has dug, but you'll be doing that endlessly if you don’t address the underlying reason your dog is digging holes in the first place. Dogs may dig up a yard for a number of reasons:

  • They’re bored and need entertainment or a job to do.

  • They were bred to dig.

  • They are searching for prey, like burrowing animals or pests.

  • They’re hot (or cold).

  • They’re trying to escape after or away from something.

  • They’re seeking attention.

It may be hard to find the root of the problem at first, but considering certain canine patterns and behaviors can help you narrow it down.

How to stop your dog from digging in your yard

How you stop the digging depends on the underlying cause, but in general, consider first what your dog might need—whether that's a toy to keep it entertained, or shade, or water. Frequent walks, minimizing unsupervised time and engaging your dog with tricks or commands can help, too. Punishing your dog generally doesn’t. And if you’re ferreting out pests, be sure to avoid toxic products that your dog could accidentally ingest.

An oft-repeated bit of lore suggests that filling holes with your dog's own poop will deter them from digging in the same spot again. It's worth a try—most dogs won’t go after their own poop, but some might. If it's a deeper hole, don't put their poop at the bottom. Add some soil first, then place the poop a few inches below the surface, and top off with more soil.

Finally, if the digging continues, you may be able to train your dog to dig in a designated area—say, a pit filled with soil or sand and your dog’s toys. Lead them to that area and reward them when they use their digging pit instead of digging in other parts of your yard.

How to repair holes your dog has dug in your yard

Filling in the holes your dog has dug doesn't sound complicated, but you shouldn’t just push the dug-out dirt back into the hole. (You probably wouldn’t be able to do this anyway, as dogs that dig typically make a huge mess by kicking dirt everywhere.) Instead, you’ll need to bring in topsoil and, if you have grass, add grass seed or a sod patch.

Follow these steps when repairing dog-dug holes.

If you're using grass seed

  • Fill the hole with topsoil, water it, and add just enough additional soil to bring it to the same level as the ground.

  • Add seed and water, following the instructions on the bag.

If you're using a sod patch

  • If you're using a sod patch, fill the hole with soil to just below ground level, leaving a gap equal to the thickness of your sod patch.

  • Roll out the sod over the hole, and cut the edges to fit.

  • Remove the sod and shovel out the hole as needed so the sod patch will sit flush with the surrounding ground.

  • Place the sod and water it daily until it takes root.

A highlight of Max's June lineup is the season two debut of House of the Dragon (June 16), the HBO Original drama that tells the story of House Targaryen, 200 years before Game of Thrones begins. New episodes will drop on Sundays at 9 pm ET through August 4.

Max's HBO Original documentary slate this month covers sports, Broadway, rock music, and psychiatric treatment. First up is Here to Climb (June 18), which tracks professional sport climbing champ Sasha DiGiulian over the course of her career, followed by Slave Play. Not a Movie. A Play. Fans of Hacks (and comedy) will appreciate Everything Must Go (June 13), the debut standup special from Hannah Einbinder.

Finally, there's Problemista (June 28), an A24 film starring Julio Torres—also the writer and director—as an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador navigating the art world and immigration system. Other cast include Tilda Swinton, RZA, Greta Lee, and James Scully. Julio Torres also created, wrote, and directed Fantasmas (June 7), an HBO Original comedy series of vignettes set in an alternate version of New York City.

Why You Should Get Your REAL ID Now

23 May 2024 at 11:30

The Department of Homeland Security strung us along on the deadline for obtaining a REAL ID—a U.S. state driver's license or identification that meets REAL ID Act security standards required for air travel—but the final deadline is now just under a year away. If you haven't already obtained yours, you must do so by May 7, 2025.

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to a 9/11 Commission recommendation to standardize identification issuance. Initially, states were expected to comply by 2008, but after multiple extensions, travelers ages 18 and older were told to obtain this enhanced form of identification by October 1, 2020. The deadline was then pushed back to May 3, 2023 and later postponed again during COVID to 2025.

Many states have been issuing REAL IDs for several years, and you can check to see if you already have one—thanks to a renewal or upgrade in recent years—by locating a gold or black star in the corner of your state-issued driver's license or identification card.

If you don't, and you want to use your license to clear airport security or enter certain federal buildings, you should start the process now.

How (and why) to get a REAL ID now

If you don't have a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card after May 7, 2025, you won't be able to get on a plane with your standard state-issued license or ID card (though TSA will still accept a handful of other documents, such as a passport or DHS trusted traveler card, for security purposes).

While May 2025 may seem like a ways away, it's worth upgrading your current ID sooner than later, as it may take time to collect the necessary documentation and get an appointment at your driver's license division, especially if you wait until the last minute.

You can use this map from the Department of Homeland Security to link directly to your state's requirements for obtaining a REAL ID. In most cases, you'll need proof of your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two documents with your address, and lawful residency status. You will also need a new photo, so while you may be able to start the REAL ID application online, you will need to complete the process in person. And, of course, in most cases you'll pay a fee.

Note that a REAL ID is not required for other purposes, such as driving or voting.

What's New on Hulu in June 2024

21 May 2024 at 10:00

A highlight of Hulu's June lineup is season three of FX's The Bear (June 27), the Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning chaotic comedy-drama starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as chefs and staff of the Chicago beef sandwich shop. The season sees the crew trying to elevate The Bear to the highest level of fine dining.

Hulu is also dropping several original documentaries in June, starting with BRATS (June 13), which dives into the culture of Brat Pack actors (including director Andrew McCarthy) and films (St. Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, to name a few) by bringing together members of the crew. There's also Breakin' on the One (June 24) about the 1981 Out-of-Doors Festival featuring the break dance battle between the Rocksteady Crew and the Dynamic Rockers, and Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge (June 25) about the life and career of the designer and her fashion empire.

In the same vein is the limited biographical series Becoming Karl Lagerfeld (June 7), which stars Daniel Brühl as the famous designer in his early years. The story is adapted from the Raphaëlle Bacqué book Kaiser Karl and also features Arnaud Valois as rival designer Yves Saint Laurent, Alex Lutz as businessman and backer Pierre Bergé, and Théodore Pellerin as companion Jacques de Bascher.

For true crime fans, there's the Hulu original docuseries Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini (June 20) about the 2016 disappearance and supposed abduction of a California woman and the case that followed.

Finally, June brings Pride Month content such as livestreams of the 2024 LA Pride Parade (June 9) and Pride Across America (June 30).

Here’s everything else coming to (and leaving) Hulu in June, including comedy specials from the likes of Eddie Izzard, Mike Birbiglia, and Margaret Cho and library films ranging from the Anchorman duo to the full Saw series.

How to Use 'Buy Now, Pay Later' to Help (Not Hurt) Your Credit

20 May 2024 at 15:00

The rise of "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) services has made it easy for consumers to take out small, short-term loans to make purchases and pay them back in installments (typically four, with a payment due every two weeks).

Until recently, BNPL loans have had little to no impact on consumers' credit because the information on those purchases—including your payment history—hasn't been sent to the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). However, that's changing: Apple is now reporting all BNPL loans to the bureaus, while others, like AfterPay, Affirm, and Klarna, are sending on at least some information about these accounts too.

But although BNPL loans are beginning to appear on credit reports and will be visible to both consumers and lenders who pull your credit, they aren't being factored into scores yet. Even still, you can use BNPL to positively affect your credit.

How to use buy now, pay later to build your credit

Responsible use of BNPL loans—paying them off on time and in full—can offer consumers with limited credit histories the opportunity to build credit, which in turn makes them eligible for other credit products and lower interest rates in the future. Even though these loans won't directly impact your scare, your history of on-time payments and your proven ability to manage credit (and a specific type of credit—i.e. an installment loan) will still be visible to lenders/creditors that are actually reviewing your credit report rather than just pulling your score.

This isn't a quirk exclusive to BNPL loans. For example, reported rent payments aren't factored into all credit scoring models either. But a history of making scheduled payments on a loan demonstrates to creditors that you are a lower risk for holding a credit card, car loan, or mortgage.

BNPL loans may be particularly useful for those who are just establishing credit, though there are a variety of other ways (like rent reporting) that may be safer than taking out a short-term loan.

In terms of credit building, BNPL is best for those who have money in the first place, according to Andrew Herzog, a certified financial planner based in Texas. He recommends using these services on relatively small, non-recurring purchases that you have the cash for and can easily keep track of.

(Again, this only works if your installment loan and payment history are being reported to credit agencies, which isn't currently the case for all BNPL providers.)

Use caution with buy now, pay later

Of course, BNPL can still be risky: if you get carried away with the convenience, it's easy to spend far more than you can actually afford. There are also hidden costs, like late fees, transaction fees, and interest fees (if you fall behind), which can quickly increase your monthly payments and sink you further into a financial hole. Nearly 20% of consumers using BNPL have missed payments, and 30% have overspent, according to a Bankrate survey.

Missed payments can hurt your credit and, as CNBC points out, short-term BNPL loans can also lower the average age of your credit history, which can indirectly—and negatively—affect your score. And no matter how responsible you are, BNPL is still a form of debt.

In general, you should avoid relying on these services for everyday necessities (like groceries) or excessive spending, and use them instead (and infrequently) for financing medium-sized purchases for which you have the funds as well as a clear and realistic repayment plan.

Where to Find (Legal) Weed in the U.S. in 2024

17 May 2024 at 12:00

During his 2024 State of the Union address, President Joe Biden affirmed his position that the U.S. needs to change the way it polices cannabis, stating "‘No one should be jailed for using or possessing marijuana." This past week, he reiterated those beliefs in a video released to social media, while announcing that the federal government had reclassified cannabis from a Schedule I drug to Schedule III.

What does that mean, exactly? Reclassifying cannabis as a Schedule III drug is a major change in federal policy, but it is not the same as federal legalization. Instead, it means cannabis is no longer classed with more serious Schedule I (drugs considered to have "no medical use" and a high potential for abuse; examples include heroin and ecstasy). Schedule III drugs are considered to have a mild to low risk of physical or psychological dependance.

While the reclassification won't federally legalize the drug, nor change its legal status at the local level in states that have legalized medical or recreational use, it could make it easier for scientists to research its benefits for medical use, as well as allow business to claim more credits and deductions on their federal taxes.

Federal policy is following public sentiment

Biden's recent announcement mirrors changing public opinion on the drug, and follows a surge in state-level legalization efforts. In the wake of the November 2023 election, when voters in the conservative state of Ohio overwhelmingly voted to legalize the recreational use of cannabis, nearly half of U.S. states have now legalized the recreational use of cannabis.

Ohio was the third state, following Delaware and Minnesota, to pass legalization measures in 2023, bringing the number of states where recreational use is permitted to 24; cannabis (as opposed to THC-free CBD) is still (more or less) wholly illegal in 12 states, while the remainder allow for legal medical use, with varying restrictions.

Here’s a rundown of where weed is legal for recreational and medical use (and where it isn’t) as of May 2024.

States that legalized weed in 2023

In addition to Ohio, which legalized recreational cannabis via a ballot measure, Delaware and Minnesota changed their laws via legislation earlier this year.

States that have legalized recreational marijuana

In 24 states, including 2023's new additions, weed is treated like alcohol—it’s legal for adults (21 and over) to purchase and is regulated and taxed by the government. The specifics of what you can purchase and possess (and where) vary a bit by state. These states also have medical marijuana.

  • Virginia

  • Washington

Recreational weed is also legal in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Areas that have legal weed but no sales

In the District of Columbia, it’s legal to possess and grow limited amounts of weed, but there are no commercial sales outside of medical marijuana from a limited number of licensed dispensaries.

States that have medical cannabis laws

A number of states have legalized medical marijuana but do not allow broader recreational use.

*According to the Marijuana Policy Project, these states have also decriminalized marijuana, reducing or removing jail time for possession of limited amounts of weed.

States that have decriminalized weed

Nebraska and North Carolina have laws that decriminalize marijuana to a degree, meaning penalties for first-time possession of small amounts of weed are reduced. Both have a suspended sentence for a first offense—Nebraska imposes a fine and a possible drug education course. Medical marijuana legislation has failed in both states.

States that have (almost) nothing

The remaining states do not permit broad medical or recreational marijuana—nor is weed decriminalized—though all except for Idaho allow access to low-THC products containing CBD for medical use (which, while technically “legal medical cannabis,” isn’t quite the same thing as a robust legal medical market).

The legal status of hemp-derived cannabis

All of the above references cannabis containing delta 9 THC, the intoxicating substance in the cannabis plant. However, new extraction techniques have allowed manufacturers to create synthetic forms of cannabis derived from hemp plants, including delta 8 THC and, more recently, THCa.

These substances are federally "legal" due to a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill that allowed for the cultivation of hemp. While some states have tried to rein in these products with local legislation, they continue to proliferate, providing a (more or less) legal alternative to tried-and-true cannabis—though the lack of regulations governing their manufacture has raised questions about their safety.

How to Keep Deer and Other Animals from Destroying Your Yard (Without Destroying Your Yard)

15 May 2024 at 13:30

If you've put any amount of work into planting outdoors, the last thing you want is for pests to take up residence and use your yard like their own personal pantry. Unless you take an active approach to warding them off, animals like deer, rabbits, and raccoons can quickly decimate your flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

You probably don't want to spray your space with a bunch of chemicals that can harm you, your plants, or even pests—so try one (or several) of these safer strategies instead.

Build a physical barrier

A fence may be the most effective approach to keeping critters away from your plants, as they can't eat them if they can't reach them. Deer fencing is tall—typically 7 feet—with a narrow weave and can be made of wire or heavy plastic, while chicken wire can keep rabbits away. Make sure your wire fence is at least 4 feet tall, buried 6 inches deep to deter burrowing, and bent away from the garden to prevent jumping and climbing. You can also use domes or chicken wire cages over the tops of your beds. These aren't the most attractive solutions, but they work.

Growing in greenhouses or fenced-in raised beds with high walls can also limit critter damage. Or, if you want a more natural physical barrier, put a spiky bush or hedge native to your area around the plants you want to protect.

Finally, tall grasses and shrubs around the edges of your yard or garden can create a natural barrier to entry while also providing a low-stakes snack option for pests. If they fill up on these plants, they may do less damage to the ones you care more about.

Use smells and tastes they detest

If you're going to plant things critters like to eat, you should also plant some they don't—highly fragrant plants can work well. Rabbits dislike flowers like lilac, zinnias, daffodils, lavender, and snapdragons as well as onions and garlic. Sage and other herbs can also keep critters away. For deer, try placing containers of mint around the edges of your garden, as they are repelled by the smell. Anything textured or spiky can also act as a natural deterrent.

Aside from plants, there are other smells and natural substances that can repel critters. Farmer's Almanac has a long list of suggestions for rabbits (and another for deer) but some of the most common are talcum powder, Irish Spring soap, and cayenne pepper, which can be mixed with water and sprayed around your plants or garden beds. Peppermint oil applied to hard surfaces or mint tea bags placed near plants may repel deer. Make sure you reapply after it rains.

Scare them away (gently)

Startling critters when they enter your yard or approach your garden may deter them from getting close to your plants. Motion-activated lights and sprinklers that can easily be moved to different locations are a good option, such as solar-powered lights that stake into the ground. If you have a rabbit problem, try small mirrors or jars filled with water in and around your garden may scare them off. Ultrasonic devices can also deter deer without hurting them.

Keep your yard tidy

A neat yard offers fewer options for critters to take up residence. Consider keeping compost in a closed bin, and clean up piles of brush and leaves. Fill in holes that could be rabbit dens, and block entry to the space under your deck or porch.

Of course, none of these methods are foolproof, and some may work only temporarily or in combination with one another. It's best to be realistic about the problem and effectiveness of solutions.

Finally, keep in mind that some creatures can actually be beneficial for your yard, as they both enhance the diversity of your outdoor ecosystem and keep harmful pests at bay. For example, birds can be effective pollinators and provide pest control services by eating mosquitos, aphids, and even rodents. Toads, frogs, lizards, and worms can also help your garden grow.

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for June 1, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is easier; I got it in three. Beware, there are spoilers below for June 1, Wordle #1,078! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

They're almost all common letters today! Only one isn't in our mnemonic, and it's also pretty common.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and CLOTH. With "A" as the second letter and "I" not fitting as the third, the only likely solution was BASIN.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was easier. The hint was “complete and utter confusion” and the answer contained four common letters and one fairly common letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was CHAOS.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.
