The Knowledge | Is Bayer Leverkusen’s 40-point increase between seasons a record?

29 May 2024 at 03:00

Plus: very early promotions and relegations, and teams with multiple cups but no league titles in their trophy cabinets

“This season, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart improved on their previous seasons’ points tallies by 40 – as did Leicester City in 2015-16, ” tweets Ben Janeson. “Which other clubs have improved on their previous seasons’ points tally by 40 or more (playing the same amount of matches, in the same league)?”

Leverkusen’s extraordinary success has been the story of the European season. In 2022-23 they finished sixth with 50 points from 34 games; a year later they romped to their first Bundesliga title, finishing unbeaten with 90 points. They finished 17 points clear of runners-up Stuttgart, who made an equally remarkable improvement this season. A year after finishing 16th – and needing to beat Hamburg in a relegation playoff – Sebastian Hoeness’s side more than doubled their points tally (from 33 to 73) and pipped the mighty Bayern Munich to second place.

The Knowledge | Which football teams have won the most domestic cups in a row?

22 May 2024 at 03:00

Plus: winning every domestic honour, the mother of all aggregate league drubbings and more

“Wolfsburg just won their 10th DFB-Pokal Frauen in a row. Is that a record for a cup competition?” wonders Kári Tulinius.

Wolfsburg’s women’s team have dominated the German Cup to a staggering degree. They won it this year without conceding a goal, winning 2-0, 5-0, 3-0, 9-0 and finally 2-0 against Bayern Munich in the final earlier this month. Last season, they conceded only three goals en route to glory, but compensated by scoring 27 in five games. In fact it’s four years since they failed to win a DFB-Pokal game by at least two goals; they won the 2020 final on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw with SGS Essen.

10 Germany (VfL Wolfsburg, 2015-24)

6 France (Lyon Féminin, 2012-17)

4 England (Arsenal Women, FA Cup, 2006-09; Liverpool Men, League Cup, 2018-21; Manchester City Men, League Cup, 2018-21)

3 Italy (Juventus Men, 2015-18), Spain (Athletic Bilbao Men, 1930-33; Barcelona Men, 2015-18)

Premier League 2023-24 review: our writers’ best and worst

21 May 2024 at 03:00

The best managers, finest signings and most dramatic matches – plus the biggest flops and greatest gripes of the season

Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice were the driving forces in Arsenal’s midfield that pushed Manchester City all the way, and William Saliba excelled in the division’s meanest defence while barely breaking sweat. The blistering late-season form of Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and Michael Olise also deserve a mention, although it’s hard to look past City’s two most influential players this season: Phil Foden and Rodri. Foden came of age in the lengthy absence of an injured Kevin De Bruyne and has deservedly been crowned player of the year by the Premier League and Football Writers’ Association. Rodri was mystifyingly left off the shortlist for the former but his achievement of going the season unbeaten in a City shirt, other than in a game lost on a shootout, underlined his importance to everything they do.
