No Tory MPs voted positively on climate issues since party took power, study finds

Labour and Liberal Democrats dominated list of MPs who were rated as very good in backing environmental policies

No elected Tory MPs have been rated as voting positively on climate issues, under a survey of parliamentary voting patterns since the Conservatives took power in 2010.

Only a single sitting Conservative was rated as β€œgood” on climate votes in the ranking, but that was Lisa Cameron, the MP for East Kilbride, who defected from the Scottish National Party in October.

Call for stricter rules to stop UK MPs repeating conspiracy theories

Demos report come after two ministers publicised unverified claims about low-traffic neighbourhood schemes

Politicians should be subject to stricter rules on spreading disinformation or wild claims for which there is scant evidence, the thinktank Demos has urged, after senior members of the UK government repeated conspiracy theories on 15-minute cities.

Parliament’s ethics and standards watchdog should urgently review its requirements to ensure ministers were truthful and accurate in their communications on contentious issues, and avoid spreading disinformation that can polarise debate, the thinktank said in a report on low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs).

Chris Grayling named top green MP by Conservative Environment Network

MP, not renowned for action on environment, chosen for efforts to tackle global deforestation and restore UK’s wildlife habitats

To the surprise of many, the Conservative Environment Network named their favourite MP as … Chris Grayling.

Despite not being renowned for his action on the environment, the former Cabinet minister was chosen as parliamentarian of the year by the network, which said it was honouring his efforts to tackle deforestation internationally and restore the UK’s vital wildlife habitats.

Cop29 at a crossroads in Azerbaijan with focus on climate finance

Fossil-fuel dependent country hopes to provide bridge between wealthy global north and poor south at November gathering

Oil is inescapable in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The smell of it greets the visitor on arrival and from the shores of the Caspian Sea on which the city is built the tankers are eternally visible. Flares from refineries near the centre light up the night sky, and you do not have to travel far to see fields of β€œnodding donkeys”, small piston pump oil wells about 6 metres (20ft) tall, that look almost festive in their bright red and green livery.

It will be an interesting setting for the gathering of the 29th UN climate conference of the parties, which will take place at the Olympic Stadium in November.
