Max Verstappen battles back to claim Emilia-Romagna F1 GP pole

18 May 2024 at 14:53
  • World champion equals Senna record of eight straight poles
  • Oscar Piastri demoted to fifth so Lando Norris second on grid

Max Verstappen had to pull off a comeback he believed was the best he had managed for more than five years to claim pole position for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, delivering a suitably superb lap under immense pressure that raised him to stand alongside Ayrton Senna with a record eighth consecutive pole.

In the year of the 30th anniversary of Senna’s death at Imola, Verstappen had to dig deep to deliver, after a torrid weekend during which he and Red Bull have struggled with the car’s grip and balance.

SpaceX got the fanfare, but Boeing’s first crew flight is still historic

If you want to know what it's like to take a new spacecraft on its first test run in orbit, there are only three people in the Western world you can call.

That fact should drive home the rarity of debuting a new human-rated spaceship. When Boeing's Starliner capsule lifts off Monday night, this group of three will grow to five. Veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, both former US Navy test pilots, will be at the controls of Starliner for the ride into low-Earth orbit atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

"The first crewed flight of a new spacecraft is an absolutely critical milestone," said Jim Free, NASA's associate administrator. "The lives of our crew members, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, are at stake. We don’t take that lightly at all."

We Sent Ralph Nader Some of Our Favorite Pens. He Dismissed Them All.

4 May 2024 at 11:17
Ralph Nader is loyal to one pen: the Papermate Flair. But Nader claims that the pens are drying out quicker then they used to. He reached out to Wirecutter (a NYT property) and they investigated. Archive.is link: https://archive.is/54jtw

"For years I've been using felt pens, mostly red and black but sometimes purple, to mark up The New York Times," Nader told me in a phone interview last year. "I go through every page of the Times, and I mark up different articles and send them to different people. And I do that with The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal." (I am aware that once I click "Post" I cede control of this article, but if this could become a fun conversation about pens and not the umpteenth rehash of past presidential campaigns, I'd love it.)

CL0P Lists McKinley Packing, Pilot, and Pinnacle Engineering as Latest Victims

CL0P Ransomware

The CL0P ransomware group has listed 3 additional victims on its leak site. The mentioned victims include: McKinley Packing, Pilot and the Pinnacle Engineering Group. McKinley Packing is a firm that provides paper and packaging company across the United States of America, with its production and distribution network operating in multiple different states. The Pilot Corporation, founded in 1918, is a Japan-based manufacturer of writing instruments. The company has subsidiaries in Europe, Asia, South America and North America. The Pinnacle Engineering Group (P.E.G.) offers civil engineering, construction, land surveying, landscape architecture, and drone services to private developers and government agencies.

No Confirmation Yet of CL0P Ransomware Group's Claims

While the group has listed basic information and description about the firms, while linking to their official websites, the group has not provided larger context or details regarding the attack. However, along with their descriptions the group also claimed that these companies did not care about their victims and ignored security practices. These targets while unconfirmed, operate with millions of dollars in annual revenue and span across multiple territories. As CL0P listed the American branch of Pilot in its description of the attack, it is possible that the attack was likely focused on the American region and did not impact its main Japanese headquarters or other regional subsidiaries. It did not list headquarters nor physical address for its other victims, making details about the attack further unclear. The Cyber Express Team has reached out to both the American branch of Pilot Corporation as well as McKinley packaging for further details and confirmation about the attacks. However, no response has been received yet at the time of writing this article.

CL0P Ransomware Group Has a History of Striking Prominent Targets

The CL0P ransomware group, being one of the most prominent ransomware groups, is known for it's attacks on high-profile targets as well as the extent of data stolen in their operations. Last year in 2023, the group was responsible for massive data breach attacks on several different organizations through the exploitation of the MOVEit Vulnerability. This campaign prompted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to issue a joint cybersecurity advisory (CSA) to disseminate the IOCs and TTPs associated in CL0P's operations through FBI investigations.
