I hate golf | Adrian Chiles

14 October 2026 at 11:46

I’ve been trying to quit the game for years. Just when I thought I was out, it pulled me back in …

I hate golf. A good walk spoiled? The whole day spoiled, more like. As with many cases of hate, it has its roots in love. You see, I just love the feeling of hitting the ball sweetly. If you feel the same way, then you’re into golf; if you don’t, then you’re not. But I am, and from the moment I struck a ball sweetly for the first time, I was hooked. It happened playing my first proper round of golf, off the third tee at the Gower Golf Club. Woomph. Making hardly a sound and barely seeming to make an impact as club hit ball, off it went. And that was me.

My logic ran that if I could play like that as an absolute beginner, imagine what I could do with a bit of practice. I strode up to my ball on the fairway and, swinging with great confidence, played an air shot. Missed it completely. Pretending this was but my practice swing, I tried again, and this time made contact with the ball, but mostly with the ground, causing lasting damage to the fairway. The ball advanced all of six inches. Welcome to golf.

Topgolf saved over $11.3 million after leaving VMware

13 October 2026 at 17:33

Topgolf’s VMware costs were going to increase by 400 percent under Broadcom. To avoid that cost, the sports entertainment company moved 12,000 virtual machines (VMs) to VergeIO’s VergeOS and has saved over $11 million so far.

Before migrating, Topgolf’s VMware connection β€œran very deep,” Scott Forehand, Topgolf’s global infrastructure manager, told Ars Technica.

Topgolf has over 100 locations worldwide featuring interactive golf games with real-time shot tracking and digital analytics. The company used vSphere and ESXi for decades and started using VxRail, the hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform that VMware co-engineered with Dell, in 2017. Topgolf employees previously participated in numerous VMware customer councils and have been interviewed for books on how Topgolf used vSphere and Horizon (now Omnissa Horizon), per Forehand, who is a leader of the Dallas/Ft. Worth VMware User Group.

Jon Rahm’s LIV exit set to trigger mass exodus of players from stricken tour

7 October 2026 at 15:14
  • Tyrrell Hatton and other big names likely to follow

  • Tour filed for bankruptcy after Saudi funding withdrawn

Confirmation that Jon Rahm will play no part in LIV Golf in its post-Saudi Arabian form is likely to be only the start of a mass exodus from the breakaway circuit.

A bankruptcy hearing on Wednesday heard Rahm’s lawyer say β€œunacceptable” terms proposed by LIV 2.0 mean the Spaniard will shortly walk away from a tour which has lingering hopes of continuing as a going concern. Rahm’s departure from LIV, which he joined in 2023, was inevitable, but still a significant blow and moment in time given his status in his sport.
