Uefa is investigating allegations of discriminatory chanting by Serbia fans during their team’s 1-0 defeat against England in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

Souness, who also played with Hansen for Scotland, told TalkSport: “I spoke to him yesterday and he sounded fabulous so I hope that’s him on the way to a full recovery. I’ve been speaking to his son and Janet, his wife, and I’ve been phoning his phone.

A man who murdered a pensioner who used to teach at one of the UK’s most exclusive schools has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 22 years.

Paul McNaughton, 29, admitted killing Peter Coshan, 75, in a flat in Leith in August 2022 after he used a catfishing scam that involved a fake profile on a dating site to lure him to the address.

The Millwall and Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26, the club have announced. It has been reported that Sarkic fell ill at an apartment in the town of Budva in Montenegro on Saturday morning.

“Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26,” the Championship club said in a statement. “Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time. The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”

Championship clubs hail ‘new era’ after approval of promotion to Premiership

Championship clubs have welcomed the approval of promotion to the Premiership as a “new era” for the professional game in England.

The Rugby Football Union’s council has ratified a home-and-away playoff between the bottom-placed Premiership club and the winner of the Championship, starting from the 2025-26 season. It means there could be movement between the top two divisions for the first time since Saracens returned to the top flight in 2021 after receiving a 105-point deduction for salary cap breaches, resulting in their relegation 12 months earlier.

British Basketball League operators have licence terminated over finances

The British Basketball League’s operating company has seen its licence terminated by the British Basketball Federation after concerns over its financial position.

Basketball League Ltd has been overseeing the men’s professional league under the terms of a 10-year licence granted by the sport’s governing body in 2017. However, as uncertainty continues over its financial position – with the American-based investment firm 777 Partners, whose proposed takeover of Everton football club fell through, holding a 45% stake in the league along with ownership of the London Lions franchise – the BBF felt decisive action was needed before planning for the 2024-25 season.

Police investigate potential offence after hoax package sent to former defence minister Jeremy Quin

A bomb squad had to be called in to a Conservative candidate’s constituency office after he said he received a suspicious package.

Sir Jeremy Quin, a former defence minister and the Tory candidate for the Horsham constituency, received the package at his West Sussex office. Bomb disposal experts were called in to investigate after a decision by Sussex police. Police and the explosive ordnance disposal team were stood down by about 9pm on Thursday after the package was confirmed to be safe, although the force is investigating whether an offence has been committed.

Raducanu copes with windy conditions to breeze into Nottingham last eight

Emma Raducanu defeated Ukraine’s Daria Snigur to reach her first WTA Tour quarter-final on grass at the Rothesay Open in Nottingham. The former US Open champion produced a solid display in cool, windy conditions to triumph 6-2, 6-2, with 11 aces proving very useful.

Raducanu had complained strongly about the line calls in her first-round win over Ena Shibahara, and there were a few more disputes here, with several overrules and both players voicing their unhappiness. She struggled to find her range and timing in the first couple of games against 22-year-old Snigur, who is ranked 127th and proficient on grass having won the junior title at Wimbledon five years ago.

West Ham have completed the signing of the Brazilian attacking midfielder Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras. The 18-year-old has agreed a five-year deal and will finalise his switch when the transfer window opens on Friday.

“I’m very happy to be signing with West Ham United, a club that trusted in my work,” said Guilherme. “I also want to thank everyone at West Ham, particularly [the technical director] Tim [Steidten] and his team who came to Brazil and not only talked with me, but also with my family. They presented the project, and both my family and I liked it. So, I’m very happy to be signing with this club and hope to contribute as much as possible. If things go well, we have a beautiful journey ahead.”

NHS Blood and Transplant is appealing for O blood-type donations as this is safe to use for all patients. The cyber-attack means the affected hospitals cannot match patients’ blood at the same frequency as usual.
