The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable review – Netflix doc on β€˜secret album’ is strictly for super fans

The lore of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, once bought by Martin Shkreli, is explored in a rambling film produced by RZA

For every reason except one, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, the seventh album by the Wu-Tang Clan, should’ve been a commercial hit. The 31-track double album, recorded in secret between 2007 and 2013, reunited all of the remaining members of the hallowed Staten Island rap crew and featured eye-catching collaborators from the standard (Redman, offshoot group Wu-Tang Killa Bees) to the unexpected (Cher, Game of Thrones actor Carice van Houten). The sound, at least according to those involved, harkened back to the glory days of the group’s beginnings in the 90s.

But for years, almost no one heard it. The group only issued a single copy of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin – on CD, ensconced within layers of filigreed silver – with the stipulation, in legalese, that it could not be used for any commercial purposes for 88 years. Martin Shkreli livestreamed himself violating lifetime pharma ban, FTC says

13 October 2026 at 18:48

Martin Shkreliβ€”the ex-pharmaceutical executive infamous for illegally hiking the price of a lifesaving anti-parasitic drug by more than 4,000 percent and getting a seven-year prison sentence for the fraudulent scheme he used to do itβ€”has been under a lifetime ban from the pharmaceutical industry since 2022.

However, according to the Federal Trade Commission and the attorneys general of seven states, Shkreli has "flagrantly and repeatedly" violated that ban nearly the entire timeβ€”allegedly by trading stock in dozens of drug companies and discussing the industry during livestreams on social media.

On Tuesday, the FTC and the seven states asked a federal judge to hold Shkreli in contempt for the alleged violations. The states include New York, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginiaβ€”the same states that joined the FTC in suing Shkreli in 2020 over the "elaborate anticompetitive scheme" involving the anti-parasitic drug, Daraprim. The scheme raised the price from $17.50 per pill to $750 per pill virtually overnight, while blocking generic competitors from entering the market.
