Supermarket sandwich suppliers issue recall amid UK E coli outbreak

Exclusive: Greencore recalls items sold via Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and others, as does separate firm that supplies Tesco

The sandwich maker Greencore, which supplies big supermarkets including Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, is one of a number of companies recalling products after being potentially linked to an outbreak of E coli that has caused cases in the UK to almost double to more than 200.

The company is recalling thousands of sandwiches, wraps and salads sold through those three supermarkets as well as Boots, Aldi, Amazon and the Co-op. The 45 products contain a certain variety of salad leaf linked to the outbreak identified this month by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

ShareAction charity to ask why boss’s pay is so high when it claims some staff do not receive real living wage

The UK’s biggest supermarket chain, Tesco, will face criticism over its chief executive’s near-Β£10m pay deal at its annual shareholder meeting on Friday.

The campaign group ShareAction is planning to question why Murphy’s pay has more than doubled to Β£9.9m including bonuses, when some of those working in its supermarkets do not receive the real living wage.

Legal firm says group failed to update shareholders on problems with bribery and corruption at its former Turkish operation

Investors could seek more than Β£100m in compensation from the owner of Ladbrokes and Coral for failure to update them on issues with bribery and corruption at the group’s former Turkish operation.

The planned action, led by the legal firm Fox Williams, follows Entain’s agreement to pay almost Β£600m – one of the largest financial penalties ever imposed in the UK – in a deal with HM Revenue and Customs finalised in December 2023 after an investigation into alleged bribery.

Two former BHS directors ordered to pay at least Β£18m over wrongful trading

Ruling comes eight years after retailer collapsed into administration owing creditors more than Β£1bn

Two former directors of the collapsed department store chain BHS have been ordered to pay at least Β£18m after the pair were found liable for wrongful trading and breaching their corporate duties.

The ruling against Lennart Henningson and Dominic Chandler, members of the Retail Acquisitions team that bought BHS for Β£1 from Philip Green in 2015, comes eight years after the retailer collapsed into administration owing creditors, including its pension fund, more than Β£1bn.

Thibaud Hug de Larauze is waving his iPhone, boasting that it is more than seven years old. β€œIt works great,” he says. Not what you’d expect from a tech entrepreneur heading one of France’s biggest β€œunicorn” startups – Back Market – which has raised more than $1bn to expand into 18 countries.

The chief executive of the secondhand gadget marketplace says he would rather identify as an eco-warrior than a tech guru, fighting to persuade us all to buy pre-owned phones, laptops and other devices, and repair or recycle our old ones.

Beefeater owner threatened with legal action over plan for 1,500 job cuts

Union claims Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn, has not consulted properly with restaurant staff

Hundreds of workers from restaurants including Brewers Fayre, Table Table and Beefeater outlets are threatening their parent company Whitbread with legal action over alleged poor consultation on 1,500 planned job cuts and closures.

The Unite union has written to Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn hotels, saying it is considering launching employment tribunal claims for unfair dismissal. It says some of the 3,000 workers potentially affected by the company’s moves to exit more than 200 restaurants have yet to be told which sites will close despite evidence that plans have been in place since December last year.
