Stunts, sewage and serious messaging: Lib Dems hope to capitalise on outrage at water pollution

28 May 2024 at 13:20

Party unveils plans for new regulator to tackle sewage crisis and banning bonuses for water firm CEOs as it vies for attention

The Liberal Democrats are no strangers to election stunts as they vie for attention in a crowded political field: already this year they have produced a giant hourglass to represent β€œtime running out for Rishi Sunak” and have had an activist dress up as a β€œTory” dinosaur, holding a sign reading β€œMake this Conservative government history”.

But getting their leader to fall off a paddleboard into Windermere in the Lake District to highlight England’s sewage crisis is a new one.

Tories’ national service pledge was sprung on candidates, says minister

27 May 2024 at 06:49

Steve Baker says advisers came up with policy to bring back mandatory national service without agreeing it with ministers

The Conservative campaign pledge to introduce mandatory national service was dreamed up by advisers and sprung on candidates, a government minister has said.

Criticism of the headline-grabbing policy has centred on claims it was not fully thought through before being announced, while ministers said just two days before the announcement that a return of national service was not on the cards.

Minister defends loss of high-profile Tory MPs after Gove joins exodus – UK politics live

25 May 2024 at 06:41

Treasury minister Bim Afolami said it was β€˜not unnatural’ for high-profile Tory MPs to be standing down at an election

The Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar will visit Wishaw in North Lanarkshire following the official launch of the party’s campaign on Friday. He says:

This chaotic and dysfunctional Tory government has let down Scots and put their own party interest ahead of the national interest – but the same is true of the SNP.

This is a pivotal moment for Scotland and a chance to reject the division and decline of both the Tories and the SNP.

Our campaign to beat the SNP and end their obsession with independence is going full steam ahead. John Swinney’s shameless defence of Michael Matheson is turning more and more local people away from the SNP.

We’re asking voters to come together and take the opportunity to remove the SNP from every seat possible. We have a big chance in this election, but we need to seize it.

I am proud to stand on the SNP’s record in government, and to contrast it with the record of the Westminster parties.

We have managed to achieve so much in the face of 14 years of Westminster austerity because we are the only party that will always put Scotland first – and which is focused on people’s priorities.
